Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for decorating. It is a season painted with nature’s warm, vibrant colors, crisp air, and beautiful, natural decorating elements. Welcoming the season of change by creating an inviting and cozy entrance to your home is one of the best ways to welcome guests into your home.

Natural elements are my favorite items to decorate with for fall. Furnish your porch with plants and natural items such as pumpkins, florals, Indian corn and corn shocks. Each year, it is a race to get your hands on the beautiful fall flowers and pumpkins from the local farmers in our area, so start early!

Autumn Front Porch Decor

This year, our front porch features a few chrysanthemums, pumpkins in varying shapes and colors, decorated lanterns and a cozy place to sit and take in the fresh autumn air. When putting together decor for larger, multifunctional spaces, I like to break up the decor into its different functions and decorate with that function in mind. For example, our front porch has two functional sections to it beyond the complete, cohesive design, the entrance into our home and a cozy seating area.

Creating a Welcoming Entrance

As you walk up to our home you have the decor that is most eye catching and acts as our curb appeal. The second portion of the entryway reveals itself as you cross the threshold to the porch and head towards the door.

The curb appeal features:

  • Pumpkins – Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere. I love them stacked and styled to create eye catching curb appeal. Choose colors that are contrasting, but cohesive with your overall design. Add a fall berry around the stacker for additional texture.
  • Florals – Adding fall florals helps to add both texture and color to your decor. I buy my mums still closed so that they last deep into the fall. These will be a deep burgandy once they bloom and they will be so beautiful in contrast to the white birch planters and classic orange pumpkins.

As you walk up to our front door you can find several pieces brought together to create a welcoming feel as they frame the door. The elements of this decor include:

  • Layered Doormats – Layering your door mats helps to bring in additional textiles and colors. Choosing a more natural woven rug for the base and layering a fun fall doormat on top of it, creates additional dimension to our space.
  • Wreath – A wreath, often times is the focal point of decor on the porch. It is the decor item that guests see as the door opens into your home. Choose a wreath that ties together with the theme of your decor. I chose a dried wreath that is both vibrant and airy to pull together the colors and natural elements of our porch decor.
  • Lanterns – Decorating lanterns doesn’t need to be difficult. Keep it simple and add a few ears of Indian corn and a couple gourds and you have a beautifully styled, fall latern.
  • Pumpkins – Pumpkins are a staple in the fall for me, the more, the better.
  • Florals – Florals are my home decor love language. Chrysanthemums are my birth month flower and one of my favorites. They bloom deep into the fall and have hundreds of beautiful flower heads. Place a mum in a fun container and you have a complete fall entryway look.

Creating Cozy Front Porch Seating

Our cozy seating area on the porch features a bench that we use in all seasons. Give me a blanket and a warm cup of coffee on this bench and I could soak in the fall feels all morning.

  • Seating – To cozy up our front porch we have a seating area that we keep up year-round. Our bench has a color pallet that is versatile and works well with all seasons.
  • Cozy Textiles – Cozy up the space with a fall blanket and a throw pillow. Use plaids as a fall staple or keep it simple with a solid throw.
  • Pumpkins – More pumpkins! In this space, I used one of the birch planters to hold a few gourds and styled the rest of the space with pumpkins varying shapes, sizes and colors.
  • Florals and Naturals – Dried florals help to accent the space by adding additional softness from the dried grass. I placed the Indian corn in the bucket next to the bench to really showcase the tops of the corn and to pull some of the airiness from the grasses to the other side of the bench to create a bit of balance.

Your front porch is the first thing your guests see, make it cozy and inviting to bring in the joy of all the fall season.

Common Questions

If the planter being used for a mum is too deep, what do you suggest using to prop up the plant? Often times the planters I want to use are too deep and my plants will never reach the bottom. Filling the bottom with soil or rocks becomes pricy and the planter can become very heavy. To solve this, I like to use children’s sandbox pails in the planter. Turned upside down, the pail gives the plant more height and they can be purchased cheaply at the local dollar store.

Do you have to use the traditional oranges, reds and yellows in your fall decor? What alternatives are there? The answer is no; fall does not always need to be in the warm color tones. Beiges, light browns, and muted greens are a great alternative for fall. You could incorporate additional dried items in your decor and pumpkins come in many different colors. The white and muted green pumpkins mixed with dried decor will give your fall decor a very sophisticated, neutral look!

Can I use this same decor for my Halloween display? Absolutely! It would be very easy to add some spider webs to the tops of the mums and pumpkins or seat a ghostly ghoul on your porch bench. Just add to what you already have! When Halloween is finished, remove the fright and your porch is ready to move into the month of November for Thanksgiving!
