Decorating my Christmas mantel is one of my favorite parts of preparing for the holiday season. It sets the tone for the rest of my living space and becomes the heart of my Christmas décor. This year, I’m styling my modern farmhouse mantel with a traditional Christmas look, and I’m excited to walk you through every step.

Decorate With Me: Modern Farmhouse Christmas Mantel

In this post, I’m sharing how to style a modern farmhouse Christmas mantel with a traditional twist. I will also share simple ways to transition the look from Christmas into winter decor that you can keep up into the new year.

Focal Point

This is the part I was most excited about this year! I’ve always admired the beautiful mantels with oversized gold-framed mirrors, but they were either too large for my space or didn’t quite fit my style. Then I found it—the perfect distressed white wooden mirror with just the right dimensions. It brings a soft, rustic charm while still reflecting that warm Christmas glow throughout the room.

Because I wanted the mirror to peek above the full evergreen garland I planned to use, I placed it on a picture frame holder to give it a little lift. That simple adjustment made a huge difference and really allowed the mirror to shine as the centerpiece.

Farmhouse Accents

One of my goals this year was to choose pieces that transition easily from Christmas to winter. Modern farmhouse décor makes this effortless because so many staples—think lanterns, simple art pieces, candle holders, or rustic accents—work beautifully across both seasons.

For this look, I styled a distressed white picture frame alongside a trio of matte black metal candlestick holders topped with white flameless taper candles. The combination is simple, classic, and perfectly modern farmhouse.

If you prefer a fully festive Christmas style and don’t mind swapping pieces out after the holiday, you can absolutely lean into holiday character pieces. Consider adding minimalist deer to carry you through winter, a plaid-wrapped deer for a more traditional pop, or even a nutcracker or heirloom holiday décor for a full Christmas moment.

Florals and Lights

This area is always my weakness, and I can tend to go overboard—I just love Christmas florals and ribbons! But this year, I intentionally scaled things back for a more understated, traditional look. I styled a full, lighted evergreen garland draped symmetrically across the mantel without adding any extra florals. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for florals elsewhere in my living space! On the mantel, the greenery keeps things classic, clean, and beautifully wintery.

Holiday Accents

Now for the fun little touches that make the mantel feel magical. It wouldn’t be Christmas without stockings for St. Nicholas to tuck treats and surprises into. This year, I swapped out our buffalo plaid stockings for our individually embroidered ones featuring whimsical winter scenes.

To bring in a traditional Christmas red, I draped a red mercury-glass ornament garland across the mantel and tied three little red bows around the candlesticks. These small pops of red add just the right amount of festive charm without overwhelming the modern farmhouse feel.

Bringing It All Together

One thing that feels different for me this year is how much I simplified my design. I toned down my usual love for florals and allowed the statement pieces—the mirror, the stockings, and the ornament garland—to really shine. Simple doesn’t mean boring; in fact, sometimes simplifying is exactly what elevates your space.

Don’t be afraid to pull back and let key pieces stand out. Often, that restraint is what creates the most beautiful, intentional holiday décor.

Common Questions

How can I get the look for my home? Bring the same cozy Modern Farmhouse Christmas Mantel style into your own home with these Amazon finds. Each piece helps create that warm, traditional holiday feel while keeping the look clean, simple, and timeless.

  • Garland – A full, lush, lighted evergreen garland that instantly adds classic Christmas charm to your mantel.
  • Mirror – A distressed white wood–framed mirror that creates the perfect focal point and reflects the warm glow of your holiday lights.
  • Candle Holders – Tall matte-black candlestick holders that add height, contrast, and that signature modern farmhouse touch.
  • Flameless Candlesticks – Warm white, battery-operated taper candles for a soft, flickering glow—no matches required.
  • Picture Frame – A distressed white frame that layers beautifully with holiday greenery and transitions effortlessly into winter décor.
  • Stocking Hangers – Classic metal stocking holders that anchor your stockings securely. Tip: Pair them with 3M Command Strips to keep everything perfectly in place.
  • Ornament Garland – A strand of red mercury-style ornaments for a pop of traditional Christmas color and sparkle.
  • Red Velvet Ribbon – Half-inch red velvet ribbon for the right amount of Holiday charm.

What do you do to hide your cords for your mantel lights? One of the questions I get often is how I hide the cords from my mantel lights. Because of the layout of my living room, I always run the light strand off one side of the mantel and tuck the cord neatly behind the curtains. Thankfully, I have an outlet close by, so it stays completely hidden.

If your outlet isn’t conveniently located, don’t worry—there are great solutions! Cord covers are an easy and inexpensive option, and you can find them in a variety of colors and sizes on Amazon. They can be a decorative accent while helping to keep everything looking intentional, tidy, and safe.

Can you show how this would look with the holiday items removed?
Absolutely! Because this year’s design leans more understated, transitioning it from Christmas to winter is incredibly simple. All you need to do is remove the stockings, the ornament garland, and the red bows from the candlesticks. The rest of the décor—like the mirror, garland, picture frame, and candle holders—flows perfectly into a clean, cozy winter mantel.
