Holiday Magic in the Dining Room
When styling this space, I wanted a tablescape that felt festive yet practical — something that could easily be scaled back for casual family dinners or elevated for holiday hosting. The goal was to create a look that felt special without sacrificing function.
Christmas Tablescape
The foundation of the tablescape begins with a traditional red and green plaid tablecloth, layered with festive placemats and finished with classic red charger plates. This combination instantly sets a warm, nostalgic tone while keeping the overall look timeless and inviting.
At the center of the table sits a wooden dough bowl filled with two frosted evergreen and berry candle rings, paired with two birch pillar candles. This simple centerpiece adds natural texture and soft seasonal charm while keeping the table open and conversational.
Elevated Tablescape
To elevate the look for more formal gatherings, I added extra layers of greenery for fullness and visual impact. On each side of the dough bowl, a 6ft evergreen and berry garland was folded in half and intertwined throughout, creating a lush, flowing centerpiece that runs the length of the table. This added dimension brings a more dramatic and polished feel while still maintaining a cozy, welcoming aesthetic.
Coordinated Side Table
The coordinating side table is truly one of my favorite pieces in the room. This three-tiered beauty with four functional drawers offers both storage and styling opportunities — the perfect blend of charm and practicality.
Bottom Shelf: The lowest shelf is styled with two woven baskets that neatly store extra candles and spare charger plates when not in use. Flanking the baskets are a decorative iced candle holder and a metal lantern adorned with a snowy candle ring, adding soft seasonal detail and subtle sparkle.
Middle Shelf: The second shelf is dedicated to storing my cookbooks which are anchored by farmhouse-style bookends. I love cooking from physical cookbooks and having them displayed encourages me to reach for them more often. To one side of the books sits a cloche glowing with bottlebrush trees and topped with a classic red velvet bow. On the other, a charming cookie jar holds all of our cookie cutters, filled with soft fairy lights and finished with the same traditional red velvet bow for cohesion. Top Shelf: The top shelf is truly the showstopper. It features our Advent calendar displaying a glowing Christmas village with Santa and his reindeer flying overhead. Draped along the full length of the shelf is a lush evergreen garland illuminated with warm white lights. To one side sits a rustic metal snowflake, while the other holds an Edison-style light and a metal snowflake picture frame showcasing a cherished photo of our girls from a few Christmases ago — a sentimental touch that makes the space feel personal and meaningful.
A Dining Space Set for the Season
To connect the dining room with the rest of our open living space, I added a small cedar tree wrapped in warm white lights along with the same red mercury glass garland used on our mantel. These finishing touches help create a cohesive flow throughout our home while reinforcing the cozy, traditional holiday atmosphere.
This Christmas dining space is more than just decorated — it’s intentionally styled to welcome, gather, and celebrate the season together.

Where do you store the garlands that you have in your tablescape when they are not in use? I actually keep them styled as part of the décor on my side table! I tuck the garlands behind the lanterns on the bottom shelf, which keeps them close at hand and easy to pull out whenever I want to elevate the tablescape. It’s a practical way to store them without taking away from the overall look of the room.
